I think Scott was a little nervous about having this native Scot read his first book that just happened to be about her homeland. He needn't have worried. Although the title made me cringe a bit, because it really is more what an Irishman would say than a Scot, I thoroughly enjoyed this romp across Scotland from a tongue-in-cheek American perspective. Even better was that I had Scott's voice in my head as I was reading, so I virtually had my own personal narrator! I realize not all will have this added bonus when reading this book, but I thoroughly recommend it as an entertaining and informative read. Scott does a great job of capturing the Scottish spirit and the awe-inspiring landscape of this little piece of the world. If you enjoy reading the likes of Bill Bryson, you'll love this book. Buy it, go find a quiet place with a wee dram (or a creamy pint of ale), and enjoy! I loved this book! The author and his wife take an special vacation to Scotland after finding out that he is actually of Scottish descent. He does the research into his ancestor's name and they travel about Scotland tracing the movements of his general ancestors. The chapters are laid out chronologically as he travels. What I loved about the book is its personal feel. He journals the way a real, middle-class traveler would as he experiences the stories behind the historical monuments and locations. He describes the delightful walks through each town, and the experiences he and his wife have in various pubs and inns. It felt authentic, and delightfully funny without being forced. His wife played the perfect foil to his genealogical ramblings as she pushed him to just see Scotland for Scotland's sake and for the sake of relaxation. My favorite part was the description of the music fest he had with the locals in an upstairs pub in the Highlands. What a treat!Everything about this book is delightfully positive. It is the exact kind of travel writing that I enjoy, that is not trying to be something it isn't. It is about real people coming to learn about and enjoy real people, both historically and in the present. I took it with me when I went to Scotland and it proved to be a very accurate guide.
